it’s finally here. the long wait is over. opening weekend of the college football season. but let’s face it, kids, college football is damaged. maybe even irreparably so. only time will tell. i’m having a hard time getting into the game this year. usually at this juncture i’m chomping at the bit and telling the wife not to plan something weeks in advance for some certain date because so and so are playing that day or night because i’ll be glued to the tv for hours. this year? yawn. nope. i don’t really care. the greed heads and criminals have taken care of that. yes, i know it isn’t every program and every kid isn’t a felony in progress. it just appears so. and there lies the rub. perhaps at some point this year i’ll get into the season. or maybe not. even with all that extraneous stuff going down i’ll be doing my picks just like i’ve done for a number of years now. my record for last season i was a bit over 50% for my picks. not good not bad. this year with the ennui and angst involved with the game i love, who knows? not even a breakfast of grits, parmesan cheese, and a fried egg on top was much help this morning in soothing any of the angst or ennui over the game i love.
then there’s the other shoe that seems to be dropping more often every year. the sisters of the poor schools squaring off with the big boys the first week of the season or even the second and third weeks. it’s almost as if the big boys are using the first few games like preseason games. there are a few notable exceptions but for the most part the majority of the major colleges seem to be playing the ITT School of Law Clerks & Pharmacy Techs International Fighting Road Kill the first few weeks of the season. yes, sir, exciting football to be sure. yawn. of course some, well a few or less, may actually win or cover the spread. just ask michigan about that. though that still doesn’t make it right or any more unexciting.
at any rate, just remember this is for fun only and using anything you glean here to take to your local bookie or las vegas in order to place a bet would be stupid at best. leave your wallet where it belongs, in your pocket. or in some cases with your wife or gf if they aren’t sports addicts like yourselves. the odds may change over the next few days. however, here it doesn’t matter if they do. what i have here is what i go by. so, without further ado…let the games begin.
rock ‘n’ roll.
9/1 unlv @ wisconsin. wisconsin favored by 35 points. yeah, a lot of points but if the wisconsin badgers want to end up in the rose bowl again or the big dance game they need to run the table. unlv isn’t a sisters of the poor team. i was going to pick wisconsin but i’ve changed my mind, go with unlv to cover the spread. it’s too many points. take unlv and the points. after posting this i realized this was unlv NOT nevada. screw it. take unlv.
9/1 montana st @ utah. utah favored by 28 points. montana st is a sisters of the poor team. why schools play these turkeys is beyond me. payoffs? assorted other graft and high crimes? who knows? utah ventures into the new pac 12 this season. good luck with that but they’ll win and cover the spread here.
9/2 tcu @ baylor. tcu favored by 6 points. tcu. meh. i for one am tired of it. take baylor to cover the spread or even win.
9/3 minnesota @ usc. usc favored by 21 points. the trojans might have a hard time covering the points here. might being the operative word. the reggie scandals and assorted sanctions really don’t kick in until next year. for us trojan faithful once they do kick in it’s going to be a long ass dry spell. enjoy it while you can. usc wins and covers the spread. fight on!!
9/3 byu @ mississippi st. byu favored by 3 points. one of the better games of the kick off weekend. miss st covers or wins. take them.
9/3 oregon @ lsu. oregon favored by 2 points. my beloved ducks make a foray into sec country. both programs are having off the field issues. oregon’s coach kelly seems to turn a blind eye to some of the stuff going on around him up there. or maybe it’s that lame visor he sports that’s shielding his vision. at any rate, hopefully, this game doesn’t turn into a full blown gang fight. i wouldn’t be surprised if it did. take the ducks to win and cover. too many lsu guys in jail or suspended or at the cop shop in line ups that day. quack.
9/3 boise st @ georgia. boise st favored by 3. boise st a preseason top 5 spot. they need to run the table in order to get into the big dance game. they’re also lucky the game isn’t against georgia tech. this is boise st’s last year, for what might be awhile, at having a chance to do the big game bust out deal. good luck with that. they might pull this one off but i’m taking georgia to win and or cover.
9/3 tulsa @ oklahoma. oklahoma favored by 24 points. tulsa isn’t that bad and really not even a borderline sister of the poor team. oklahoma may be on a juggernaut season run here. take the sooners to win and cover.
9/3 smu @ texas a&m. texas a&m favored by 16 points. if texas can stop thinking about bolting to some other league in search of some sort of respect they might have a shot. regular readers know i’m a big fan of coach june jones. he’s the key here. smu covers the spread and may even win.
9/5 miami @ maryland. miami is favored by 5.5 points. miami is also in a world of hurt. a bunch of suspensions already. the 80’s thug swagger of the hurricanes is back along with a major fat old guy pimp. a program gone wild once again for sure. they should get slapped down with major sanctions for their sins. pat hayden will do the happy dance when that day comes. we’ll see. this game? take maryland to cover or win.
there you have it, kids my week 1 picks. enjoy the games and enjoy the labor day holiday weekend. toss some red meat on the bbq and enjoy a few cold ones. be safe. be sane. see you next week.
